One person can now run what used to take a marketing team – and the only part that still sells is the part a machine can’t make. Start here · Essays · The podcast · Join

Chapter one

Content became free. So it stopped meaning anything.

A machine can now write your post, cut your video, script your funnel and answer your email. Everyone knows this. What almost nobody has said out loud is the consequence.

When something becomes free, it stops being proof of anything.

A well-written page used to prove someone sat down and thought. A polished video used to prove someone cared enough to make it. That is gone. Both take minutes now, and everyone has the same minutes. The output got better and it stopped counting.

So the buyer moved. Not to better content – to the thing that still costs something. A person, on camera, saying a true sentence they would have to defend if you asked them about it in a room.

Which brings me to a coach who refused to sell himself

The agency I worked at wrote him a sales video. A good one – structure, hooks, the right words in the right order. We sent it over and asked him to look into the camera and read it.

He said no.

That refusal turned into the single most useful thing I have learned about marketing in fifteen years, and I have been building on it ever since – through an agency, a data company, a podcast, and a marketing operation that is now mostly one person and a lot of machines.

That is the first essay, and it is the place to start.

What this place is

Not a blog. A set of notes, written in order, about one question: when the machine can make everything, what is left that is worth making?

I write it as email first. The website is the archive. If you only read the website you will get the arguments – you will miss the part where I tell you what broke.

Next: Start here – five things to read, in order.

P.S. I filmed a podcasting masterclass this autumn. It is not edited yet. When it is, it goes out free to the people on the list first, and I have not decided whether it goes anywhere else at all. That is the list.
